DOT Return-to-Duty Testing Program

At On-Time Screening, we provide comprehensive DOT Return-to-Duty Testing Services designed to help employers ensure that employees who have violated drug or alcohol policies are fit to safely return to their safety-sensitive positions. Our program adheres to DOT regulations (49 CFR Part 40), ensuring compliance while prioritizing workplace safety and employee recovery.

What is the DOT Return-to-Duty Testing Program?

The DOT Return-to-Duty Testing Program is a critical process for employees who have violated DOT drug and alcohol policies and are seeking to return to safety-sensitive work. Before an employee can resume their safety-sensitive duties, they must complete a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) program and pass a Return-to-Duty Drug and Alcohol Test. The goal is to ensure that employees are sober and ready to safely perform their roles.

Why Choose On-Time Screening for DOT Return-to-Duty Testing?

  • Compliance with DOT Regulations: We ensure that your Return-to-Duty testing is fully compliant with federal DOT regulations, including testing, documentation, and reporting requirements.

  • Fast, Reliable Testing: Our services are fast, efficient, and reliable, ensuring timely testing that keeps your business compliant and your workforce safe.

  • Certified Medical Review Officers (MROs): Our MROs carefully review and interpret test results to ensure accuracy and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.

  • Confidential & Professional Process: We handle all testing and result reporting confidentially, protecting both employee privacy and company compliance.

How the DOT Return-to-Duty Testing Program Works

  1. Employee Completes SAP Program: After an employee violates drug or alcohol policies, they must undergo a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) evaluation. If the employee is determined to be fit for return to work, the SAP will recommend treatment or counseling.

  2. Employee Finishes Treatment: The employee must complete the recommended treatment program, which may include counseling, therapy, or education programs designed to address substance abuse issues.

  3. Return-to-Duty Testing: Once the SAP clears the employee, they must pass a Return-to-Duty Drug Test. This test ensures that the employee is free of drugs and alcohol and is fit to return to their safety-sensitive position. The test typically involves a urine, oral fluid, or blood sample, depending on the requirements.

  4. Lab Analysis & MRO Review: The test sample is sent to a certified laboratory for analysis. Any positive results will be reviewed by a Medical Review Officer (MRO) to ensure that they are accurate and legitimate.

  5. Clearance for Return to Work: If the test results are negative (drug-free and alcohol-free), the employee is cleared to return to their safety-sensitive duties. The employee may also be subject to follow-up testing for up to 12 months as part of ongoing monitoring.

When is DOT Return-to-Duty Testing Required?

  • Following a Policy Violation: DOT Return-to-Duty Testing is required after an employee has violated company or DOT drug and alcohol policies and completed the necessary counseling or treatment programs.

  • Before Returning to Safety-Sensitive Work: Employees must pass a return-to-duty drug test before resuming their safety-sensitive duties in any position that is regulated by DOT.

  • Ongoing Monitoring: Even after returning to work, employees will be subject to random or scheduled follow-up testing for up to 12 months to ensure continued compliance and sobriety.
